โœ‹Don't Throw Them Away! Regrow Your Green Onions

All you need is water!!

By Tracy Bush, publisher of Macaroni KID Chattanooga TN August 25, 2022

I wanted to share something that I love to do with my green onions for years. I regrow them again in water.  I discovered this by mistake one day.   We normally buy 1 to 2 bunches every other month. Our household love green onion. But, since prices have gone up on them (and everything else), what better way for me to share how you can save $2 - $3 each month or more if you buy more than 2 bunches each time.   I know it doesn't sound like enough savings, but it is something out of your budget, plus it is fun to see them regrow in your kitchen. It makes a good project for the kids to do.  Anyone can grow green onions and you do not need a green thumb๐Ÿ‘.

What you must do first is prep your onions by cutting them down to almost the bulbs.  Make sure you don't cut the white bulbs.  As you can see from the picture, we use our onions to about 2 inches from the bulbs.

Next, rinse off the bulbs and roots.

Next, place them in a small cup or vase with the bottoms of the bulbs down.

Next, add cold water (not warm or hot), just enough to cover the roots/bulbs. You only need a little bit.

Finally, place onions in a bright window to get sunlight, and that is it.

Note:  New growth starts within 24 to 48 hours, so you will see it sprouting out.  You should have a fully grown green onion within 10 - 14 days.

Note: Change the water every other day to keep it fresh so the bulbs don't rot.

Note:  You can reuse those same onions at least 2 to 3 times. Afterward, you will need to get some fresh ones and start all over again.

I will update you on how my onions look in 14 days.

Happy Eating!!
